The evening will feature stunning altars (ofrendas), artwork, traditional dance, and a special concert performance by Las Cafeteras. Tickets are not required for guest admission, but registration is highly encouraged.

The RSC Plaza is an outdoor space with limited seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. There’s ample standing room, but keep in mind the surface is concrete, so you might want to dress comfortably.

Know Before You Go: Costume masks that cover the entire face are prohibited for adults 18+.

Join us on Thursday, November 12th at 6 pm in the auditorium of the Kasner Academic Building for a conversation with author Sarah Lohman and Kim Foster. Nevada Humanities selected Nevada author Sarah Lohman and her book Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods to represent Nevada at the 2026 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Her book is part of the Library of Congress Center for the Book’s national Great Reads from Great Places initiative, a list which includes recommended books for youth and adults from each affiliate center from the 50 states and six U.S. jurisdictions, including the Nevada Center for the Book, a program of Nevada Humanities that is one of 56 affiliates of the Library of Congress and its Center for the Book. Nevada Humanities’ participation in the National Book Festival and the National Book Festival Roadmap to Reading are made possible by the generous support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, with additional support from Chief Officers of State Library Agencies.

Sarah Lohman is a culinary historian and the author of the bestselling books Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods and Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. She focuses on the history of food as a way to access the stories of diverse Americans. Kim Foster is a James Beard Award-winning food writer who writes about people at the intersection of food and mental illness, family separation, poverty, addiction, trauma, and incarceration.

This event is presented by Nevada Humanities, the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project, and the City of Henderson. Endangered Eating was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and was named one of the Best Books of 2023 by Amazon’s Editors, Food & Wine, and Adam Gopnik on the Milk Street podcast. It was a finalist for the Nach Waxman Prize for Food & Drink Scholarship and winner of the Ohioana Library Book Prize for Nonfiction. Lohman’s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and NPR. Lohman has lectured across the country, from the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC, to The Neon Museum in Las Vegas. Lohman is based in Henderson.

The Thalia Dondero Gallery presents Notions of Erasure: United By Territory, an exhibit that provides an opportunity for the residents and visitors of the Vegas Valley to view selected works from the 2023 Nevada Arts Council Visual Arts Fellows. The exhibition is on view at Nevada State University through December 4, 2026.

This traveling exhibition, curated by the Nevada Arts Council’s Artist Services Program, features 2023 fellows: Jeffrey Burden of Las Vegas, Glynn Cartledge of Reno, Gig Depio of Las Vegas, Miya Hannan of Reno, Brent Holmes of Las Vegas, and Bobbie Ann Howell of Las Vegas. Each artist created work independently of one another and with no intention of ever appearing together; yet, when shown alongside one another, the exhibit reveals how an artist’s place, time and environment can create unexpected and unintended connections that share human experiences. This exhibit brings together an extraordinary collection of unique artworks that span multiple media—from intimate drawings and bold paintings to intricate textiles, delicate cut paper compositions, and innovative digital creations.

Las Vegas born poets, curious about the idea of loneliness in response to traveling across and exploring the “Loneliest Road in America, Nevada’s Highway 50. Life Magazine gave the 287 mile stretch the moniker “The Loneliest Road in America in a 1986 article that claimed the area offered no attractions or points of interest, had little services along the way, and advised travelers to possess “survival skills.” The poets’ work considers how our perceptions of loneliness may have changed. Who decides a point of interest, and can the landscape alone offer enough of an attraction to make the trek worth it?

This event is presented by Nevada Humanities, the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project, and the City of Henderson. The Marydean Martin Writers’ Project is a program of the Office for the Arts at Nevada State University. MORE ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Jennifer Battisti is a lifelong Nevadan. Her work has been anthologized in Legs of Tumbleweed, Wings of Lace, Sagebrush and Sandstone, and Where We Live, an anthology of writing and art in response to the October 1st tragedy. Her worked has also appeared in The Desert Companion, Witness, Brevity, Western Humanities Review, Split Lip, Wildsam Travel Guide, Las Vegas Writes, 300 Days of Sun and elsewhere. She is currently a Teaching Artist for the Nevada Arts Council and has also been a Teaching Artist for the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project in Clark County. She was voted best local poet by the Desert Companion in 2018 and 2021. Her work has been on display in exhibits for Nevada Humanities. Her first chapbook, Echo Bay was released in 2018 and her full-length manuscript, Off Boulder Highway was released in 2021 (Tolsun Books). Her most recent work was a collaboration with Andrew Romanelli on a travel guide of poetry about the Loneliest Road in America titled: Nevada in Our Teeth, Crossing Highway 50. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Andrew Romanelli is an educator and serves as creative director of Devoid Magazine. The Thalia Dondero Gallery presents Notions of Erasure: United By Territory, an exhibit that provides an opportunity for the residents and visitors of the Vegas Valley to view selected works from the 2023 Nevada Arts Council Visual Arts Fellows. The exhibition is on view at Nevada State University through December 4, 2026.

This traveling exhibition, curated by the Nevada Arts Council’s Artist Services Program, features 2023 fellows: Jeffrey Burden of Las Vegas, Glynn Cartledge of Reno, Gig Depio of Las Vegas, Miya Hannan of Reno, Brent Holmes of Las Vegas, and Bobbie Ann Howell of Las Vegas. Each artist created work independently of one another and with no intention of ever appearing together; yet, when shown alongside one another, the exhibit reveals how an artist’s place, time and environment can create unexpected and unintended connections that share human experiences. This exhibit brings together an extraordinary collection of unique artworks that span multiple media—from intimate drawings and bold paintings to intricate textiles, delicate cut paper compositions, and innovative digital creations.

The prestigious Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Award provides meaningful financial support and enhanced public recognition to exceptional Nevada artists, fostering their continued pursuit of artistic excellence and creativity.

The exhibit is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative (NTI) Traveling Exhibition Program , which delivers high-quality visual arts exhibits to communities throughout the state. It is funded by the State of Nevada and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
