This traveling exhibition, curated by the Nevada Arts Council’s Artist Services Program, features 2023 fellows: Jeffrey Burden of Las Vegas, Glynn Cartledge of Reno, Gig Depio of Las Vegas, Miya Hannan of Reno, Brent Holmes of Las Vegas, and Bobbie Ann Howell of Las Vegas. Each artist created work independently of one another and with no intention of ever appearing together; yet, when shown alongside one another, the exhibit reveals how an artist’s place, time and environment can create unexpected and unintended connections that share human experiences. Carlos is a Colombian American poet, speaker, actor, and educator from New York City. He is the author of Fractures, winner of the Felix Pollak Prize, Hijito, winner of the Broken River Prize and a #1 SPD bestseller, Circling Fatherhood, winner of the Poetry International Chapbook Prize, Patrilineation, winner of the Alta California Chapbook Prize, and the memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood, released by Penguin Random House.

A star of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, TV One’s Verses and Flow, and Spike Lee’s #1 box office movie Inside Man with Denzel Washington, Carlos is one of the highest booked acts in the history of the college market and among the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world. Carlos’ honors include the Sandy Crimmins National Prize for Poetry, Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award, Atlanta Review International Poetry Prize, North American Book Award Gold Medal, and the International Book Award for Poetry. A genre-transcending multi-hyphenate, he partnered with John Legend on Senior Orientation, a program to counteract bullying and champion inclusive masculinity among high school students. Pat Murphy is the author of The Adventures of Mary Darling, a historic fantasy with a feminist twist, coming out in May 2025 from Tachyon Publications. Pat’s past works include The Falling Woman (winner of the Nebula Award for novel), Rachel in Love (winner of the Nebula Award for Novella), Points of Departure (short story collection and winner of the Philip K. Dick Award), and Bones (winner of the World Fantasy Award for Novella). Pat lives on the edge of the Mojave Desert, where she shares her backyard with roadrunners, rabbits, quail, mockingbirds, and an occasional coyote.

Join us on Thursday, November 12th at 6 pm in the auditorium of the Kasner Academic Building for a conversation with author Sarah Lohman and Kim Foster. Nevada Humanities selected Nevada author Sarah Lohman and her book Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods to represent Nevada at the 2026 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Her book is part of the Library of Congress Center for the Book’s national Great Reads from Great Places initiative, a list which includes recommended books for youth and adults from each affiliate center from the 50 states and six U.S. jurisdictions, including the Nevada Center for the Book, a program of Nevada Humanities that is one of 56 affiliates of the Library of Congress and its Center for the Book. Nevada Humanities’ participation in the National Book Festival and the National Book Festival Roadmap to Reading are made possible by the generous support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, with additional support from Chief Officers of State Library Agencies.

Sarah Lohman is a culinary historian and the author of the bestselling books Endangered Eating: America’s Vanishing Foods and Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. She focuses on the history of food as a way to access the stories of diverse Americans. Kim Foster is a James Beard Award-winning food writer who writes about people at the intersection of food and mental illness, family separation, poverty, addiction, trauma, and incarceration.

This event is presented by Nevada Humanities, the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project, and the City of Henderson. Sarah Lohman
Endangered Eating was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and was named one of the Best Books of 2023 by Amazon’s Editors, Food & Wine, and Adam Gopnik on the Milk Street podcast. It was a finalist for the Nach Waxman Prize for Food & Drink Scholarship and winner of the Ohioana Library Book Prize for Nonfiction. Lohman’s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and NPR. Lohman has lectured across the country, from the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC, to The Neon Museum in Las Vegas. Lohman is based in Henderson.
